more about Regional
Reading Coalition.

The Regional Reading Coalition is a result of the "Rally to Read" Literacy Summit held on September 28, 2001, where more than 100 participants representing 36 organizations formulated a community action plan to improve literacy and reading for children and adults in the greater Kingsport community. Several objectives were identified, including
  • Increased parental involvement in reading with children
  • Formation of a coalition to coordinate efforts throughout the community
  • Increased access and utilization for reading resources in the community
  • Total community commitment to reading
As part of this community campaign, a public awareness effort is underway. Media materials have been distributed for use by print and electronic media. These materials featuring local educators are designed to encourage parents to spend time reading with their children. The Regional Reading Coalition has been established as a subcommittee of the Kingsport Area Education Council of the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce. This group will carry forward with the work necessary to monitor and improve reading and literacy in the greater Kingsport area (Sullivan/Hawkins/Scott counties, Kingsport and Rogersville).
