Santa Comes To Town on November 17
Unveiling of Santa Sculpture and Owen’s Train at Centennial Park
Kingsport, TN — The final additions to Centennial Park, Kingsport’s legacy gift for generations to come, are being unveiled on November 17th at 3:00 p.m. ‘The Spirit of Generosity’ by artist Val Lyle, from Art Now LLC, is inspired by the 75th anniversary of the Santa Train and the countless acts of generosity that have made it possible for so many years.
A full sized bronzed sculpture, the jolly Santa himself will be depicted on the back of a train caboose and invite visitors to come aboard. You can ‘travel’ the traditional train route from Elkhorn City, KY to Kingsport, TN by walking the pathway leading to the structure.
“This public artwork is sure to become a family and photo favorite and give everyone a chance to ‘ride and wave’ alongside Santa,” said Bonnie Macdonald, director of Kingsport Office of Cultural Arts. “Many thanks to those who provided the initial spark for the idea and who dreamed of making this unique sculpture a reality and to Val Lyle and Appalachian Ironworks for making it come to life.”
"Working with The Kingsport Office of Cultural Arts, Kingsport Public Art Committee, and the whole Spirit of Generosity design team has been a true honor and a joy,” commented Val Lyle, artist. “I have worked hard to make a permanent artwork worthy of this amazing legacy. Thank you for entrusting me with your dreams.”
‘Owen’s Train’ will also be dedicated at the ceremony. In memory of the brave but brief life of Owen Steinmann and in honor of Kingsport families, friends and family of Amanda Dean and Justin Steinmann have commissioned four unique train cars that will be located throughout the park.
All that visit Centennial Park will be encouraged to participate in a scavenger hunt to find all of the cars in ‘Owen’s Train.’ While finding the train cars throughout the year, park visitors can learn about Kingsport’s history, splash in the fountain and visit the Santa Train sculpture, ‘The Spirit of Generosity.’
A big thank you to CSX Railroad, Kiwanis Club of Kingsport and our Santa Families: Brogden, Dudney, Kilgore and Royston.
