Friends In Need and Appalachian Miles for Smiles Participates in
SMILE ON 60+ Senior Oral Health Initiative Serving Patients Across Tennessee
SMILE ON 60+, a statewide senior oral health initiative led by Interfaith Dental, has officially launched in partnership with 15 safety net dental clinics providing oral health care services and education for seniors in need.
SMILE ON 60+ is a system of outreach and care services designed to provide older adults age 60+ with oral health care services and education. The program will evaluate, educate, and navigate seniors into dental homes.
Those who qualify for SMILE ON 60+ are: a minimum of 60 years old; a Tennessee state resident; mobile (able to self-transport or receive transport to clinic); have an income level below 200% poverty and are dentally uninsured. The program covers many common dental procedures including cleanings, extractions, fillings, and dentures for a $25 per visit facility fee.
While Interfaith Dental Clinic is serving as the lead agency, they have over 22 partners planned to join the project over a 3-year period covering 52 counties and 42 locations; including 2 mobile units. The funding for this project was provided through a grant awarded by the Davidson County Chancery Court, Part III from the Senior Trust/Elder Trust Settlement (Case No. 11-1548-III) and through a contract administered by the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability.
Friends In Need Health Center Clinic (FIN) located at 1105 West Stone Drive in Kingsport will provide care to residents of Sullivan, Hawkins, Washington and Greene Counties in Tennessee. For this program there is no work requirement to qualify at FIN. Appalachian Miles for Smiles Mobile Dental Clinic will provide care for Tennessee residents at all event locations with follow-up care as needed at Friends In Need Clinic in Kingsport in order to establish a dental home for each patient.
Bruce Sites, Executive Director of Friends In Need states that FIN and AMS are extremely excited and honored to be part of this program to provide quality and affordable dental care to senior residents of East Tennessee and to find an affordable dental home for each patient served. Patients qualified for this program are currently being accepted at FIN Clinic and Appalachian Miles for Smiles Mobile Dental Unit scheduled events. For more information about FIN and AMS visit

About SMILE ON 60+
Pursuant to the settlement of two related Chancery Court cases in Davidson County, Tennessee, approximately $36 million in funding is being granted to six different organizations in the State for the purposes of implementing statewide initiatives designed to make lives better for older Tennesseans. Through the efforts of the Court and a group of five philanthropic organizations who provided their expertise, a process was developed to accept and then carefully vet statewide proposals in four specific areas for innovation, ability to implement, and sustainability. The process took almost two years to complete.
The four areas were selected based upon statewide need and a history of limited resources. They are:
Senior Legal Assistance
Senior Affordable Housing
The Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability (“TCAD”) is overseeing the administration of the grants. Because of the importance of this effort for older Tennesseans, TCAD and the five philanthropic organizations involved in the distribution of the grants all committed to continuing to work (for no compensation) and oversee these grants so that they achieve their overall purpose.
