In these uncertain times of crisis, Second Harvest Food Bank is continuing its mission to feed the people of Northeast Tennessee. We have been working for over thirty years to feed our neighbors in Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington Counties and are proud to be a member of the Feeding America Network of Food Banks.
But we have seen unprecedented need during the last few months going from feeding on average 40,000 people per month to well over 50,000 last month. As people continue to lose their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we know the number of people who are in need of food will rise. We have seen the number of those who are food insecure go from an average of 66,000 people this time last year to well over 73,000 in this spring’s months. We expect when the unemployment stimulus package is completed at end of summer, there will more people than ever reaching out for help. And we will be there for them.
Since the COVID-19 crisis began, we are honored that many friends from the community have lent their financial support to help our neighbors in need. But we expect the need for food in our region will continue to rise throughout 2020 and we will need the community’s support more than ever to keep our region from going to bed hungry.
